Currently a respected professor at Columbia University, Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) wrote a book years ago about the existence of ghosts in partnership with her colleague Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy). The work, which was never taken seriously, is discovered by her academic peers and Erin loses her job. When Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones), a New York subway worker, witnesses strange events underground, Erin, Abby and Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) unite and take action to save the city and the world.
Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.
